Mathematics and astronomy courses

“Mathematics and astronomy” courses included a set of astronomical activities dedicated to pupils and their teachers. Starting from basic mathematical concepts that have already been taught in class, these activities enabled pupils to rethink and apply their mathematical knowledge in practical and simple situations relative to astronomical subjects. These situations, analyzed by famous astronomers and mathematicians, showcase the link between abstract mathematics and practical astronomy.

Three types of activities were developed:

  • Activities tackling the notion of distance in astronomy, using dynamic geometry as a support of vulgarization. This geometric approach highlights the history of astronomy when it was practised by Greeks.
  • Activities tackling the notions of angle and triangle, using models and measurement tools made by pupils and their teachers while learning at the same how to use them
  • Activities tackling the notion of time and its measurement using educational open source software
