The universe of galaxies

The whitish and blurred band that we observe on the night sky is known as the Milky Way. It is our spiral galaxy consisting of a flat and disc shaped body of more than 100,000 light-years, the majority of which is consisted of stars. The only external galaxies visible to the naked eye are Andromeda, and the two Magellanic Clouds that are located respectively on in the southern and northern sky.
